JAKOB

To listen to Jakob is to journey through the harsh, beautiful, isolated landscape of the Hawkes Bay, that is their home. Swelling but direct, beautiful and uplifting yet intense and hard, this is a band declaring victory over the forces of nature.

Jeff Boyle (guitar), Maurice Beckett (bass) and Jason Johnson (drums) got together in 1998, to realise a musical vision they all shared. The result is nothing short of a beautiful contradiction; Uplifting yet dark and intense, both sonically massive and delicately complex. Jakob defy definition and while many influences come to mind theirs is a unique sound. A sonic landscape. With two albums, 'Subsets Of Sets' and 'Cale:Drew', under their belts, Jakob continue to explore new musical horizons.

Jakob's first gig was when they opened for Salmonella Dub and Pitch Black in Napier at the local pub O’Flahertys.

In October of the same year they recorded and released their self-titled EP with Venn Studios David Holmes and continued prolifically touring throughout 1999. Jakob played the 2000 The Event New Years party in Napier, and released a 7” single in February 2000 through Crawlspace Records entitled – 'Erfro'.

In March 2001 they began the recording of their first album with Venn Producer engineer David Holmes entitled - 'Subsets Of Sets' which was later released through Midium Records in August of that year. The third release in 2001 from Midium (following the Meterman and Day One albums), 'Subsets Of Sets' was one of the lushest and expansive albums released in New Zealand.

The successes of the album lead them to be nominated for Best New Artist at the 2001 B-Net New Zealand Music Awards and Best Album at the following 2002 Awards.

Successive tours followed with the likes of HDU, Meterman, Avotor, and appearances at the 2002 Big Day Out before releasing their second album 'Cale:Drew' in 2003.

TAHUNA BREAKS

Tahuna Breaks are a lively reggae/funk/soul band based in Auckland that came together out in Piha on Aucklands west coast. With influences varying from the likes of Marvin Gaye, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Bob Marley, UB40 and New Zealands very own dub and reggae movement, Tahuna Breaks is a fine tune roots blend of funk and reggae with that unique New Zealand summery sound.

Their combination of heavy skank driven grooves to uplifting and captivating funky soul, has successfully helped to impel audiences onto dance floors to cultivate a mass array of energy packed dance and enjoyment at all the gigs they have played at, and as a result, Tahuna Breaks are generating an ever growing fan base.

HOLLIE SMITH

Hollie Smith is the name on everyone's lips. Staking her reputation on the strength of standout collaborations & with the likes of TrinityRoots, Fat Freddy's Drop, Don McGlashan & One Million Dollars, she has turned heads with her deep, rich & soulful singing & songwriting, which has drawn praise from all who have had the pleasure of hearing her perform.

'E.P.' represents the first official recordings of her own music & provides the perfect platform for Hollie to demonstrate her huge musical talent. Written & arranged by Hollie from start to finish, 'E.P.' features an impressive line-up of local musicians, including Rio Hemopo & Warryn Maxwell [
TrinityRoots], Dallas Tamaira [Fat Freddy's Drop], Jeremy Toy [OpenSouls], Chris Yeabsley [Twinset] & Nick Gaffaney [Anika Moa Band].

Hollie's wide range of musical influences are evident throughout as she combines elements of soul, jazz, reggae & r&b in a distinctive manner that vividly illustrates her considerable talents. The most exciting aspect of 'E.P.' though is undoubtedly Hollie's wonderfully emotive & affecting voice, which soars, dips & jags it's way through these five slices of beautiful music.

Whatever style she embraces, Hollie creates an intriguing mix of sensual, melodic & earthy songs filled with depth, passion & power. With 'E.P.' she has delivered one of the most soulful & emotive releases of the year. Absolutely essential.

KORA

Originally hailing from Whakatane, two of the four musical brothers from the Kora family, Laughton and Brad, began playing together in the early 1990s in a band called Aunty Beatrice, winning the national Rockquest high school band competition in 1991 and the East Coast region Battle Of The Bands three years running, earning a release on Tangata Records for their efforts.

Dan McGruer studied commercial music at Whitireia Community College and is the only non-related member of Kora. He first hooked up with Laughton when they performed together in Queenstown band Soul Charge, playing and writing their own music.

In 2001 Laughton and Dan went out on their own, recording four tracks while on holiday in Queenstown, including 'Crazy Things' and 'Barely Can See', inviting visiting Madagascan tourist Lilou to lay down vocals on the song 'Barely Can See'.

'Barely Can See' has been released on Loop's 2002 Select 004 and on the EMI 2004 Compilation 'Conscious Roots' which has since gone platinum. The track was touched up by enigmatic electronic musician Lee Tui (aka
Epsilon-Blue)

In 2002, 'Politician' was recorded after Kora won Coca-Cola's Launchpad competition. 'Politician' was play listed by 15 stations nationwide and held the #1 spot on Radio Scope's alternative charts for two weeks, whilst staying in the top ten for 8 weeks.

Kora featured on The Living Room which aired on TV2 in April 2004. They have also performed at the Kaikoura Roots Festival, SoundSplash, George FM Groove In The Park, Auckland 05, and they have toured with
Shapeshifter and Salmonella Dub.

The band headed to the studio in mid-2004 to lay down a limited edition EP for both their home market and overseas release. So far the EP has reached #4 on the IMNZ (Independent Music New Zealand) Chart, #1 on the Groove Guide New Releases Chart and #3 on Amplifier's 2004 Best Seller listings.

Kora perform with an infectitious, up-beat, reggae cut.
